The global landscape of fast-food chicken restaurants is rapidly evolving and pulsating with energy. Major players such as KFC, Popeyes, Chick-fil-A, Wingstop, Krispy Krunchy Chicken, Chick N Max and Raising Cane’s are all vying for a larger slice of the market. These chains show no signs of slowing down with their notable strides in growth, novel tech implementations, and culinary creativity, ensuring they stay top-of-mind for chicken lovers.
KFC
KFC hit an impressive milestone by opening its 30,000th global restaurant in Rome, Italy. The U.S. has 4,269 locations in 2,392 cities, with California, Texas and Florida home to the most KFC restaurants.
On the menu, KFC recently launched Saucy Nuggets in five new flavors: Honey Sriracha, Korean BBQ, Sticky Chicky Sweet ‘n Sour Sauce, Nashville Hot and Georgia Gold. These saucy nuggets are available nationwide, enhancing KFC’s appeal to sauce enthusiasts.
KFC landed 14th on the prestigious list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies of 2024. The restaurant chain is also connecting with gamers in “Street Fighter 6” by adding Colonel Sanders to the fighting game’s existing roster of characters. Also, in Spain, KFC challenged players to cook fried chicken as fast as possible in “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” inspired both by the ability to cook fried chicken in the game and an in-game character who bears more than a passing resemblance to Colonel Sanders.
Popeyes
Popeyes, under the umbrella of Restaurant Brands International (RBI), has significant expansion plans to grow its U.S. and Canada locations from nearly 3,400 stores in 2023 to over 4,200 by 2028. Popeyes is focusing on innovation and quality to bolster its market presence, as seen with the permanent addition of wings in five new flavors: Honey BBQ, Roasted Garlic Parmesan, Signature Hot, Ghost Pepper and Sweet ‘N Spicy.
Adding to its growth momentum, Popeyes has introduced new tech and equipment to streamline kitchen operations. This includes automated batter makers that will help automate a labor-intensive operation and digital drop charts to enhance consistency and efficiency by helping restaurants know how much to cook and when to cook it. Both plans should make employees’ lives easier and reduce food waste and costs.
Chick-fil-A
Chick-fil-A continues to soar in popularity and performance, growing to more than 3,000 locations spanning the U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada. Chick-fil-A earned the distinction of being the third-largest fast-food chain in the U.S., only behind McDonald’s and Starbucks. In terms of annual sales per location, Chick-fil-A’s restaurants reported an average revenue of $7.5M in 2023.
The brand plans to introduce new menu items, such as the Pretzel Cheddar Club Sandwich and Cherry Berry beverages, signaling a continued emphasis on innovation and consumer engagement.
Wingstop
Wingstop had 65 new openings and a 21.6% increase in domestic same-store sales in the first quarter of 2024. The chain boasts a total revenue increase of 34.1%.
Wingstop has responded to popular demand by making the Hot Honey Rub flavor a permanent menu item. Even basketball star Giannis Antetokounmpo took to X (formerly Twitter) to demand the flavor stay on the menu.
Melissa Cash, chief brand officer for Wingstop, said Hot Honey Rub fans flooded the company with social media posts, handwritten letters and voicemails.
“We set a very high bar for the flavors that make our permanent lineup, but the popularity of this flavor speaks for itself,” she said.
Krispy Krunchy Chicken
Krispy Krunchy Chicken plans to open over 700 new locations in 2024. Most of its growth has been within convenience stores, with new units also opening in non-traditional locations such as truck stops, travel centers and Walmart locations.
Recent menu enhancements include the launch of a Cajun Chicken Sandwich, aligning with the brand’s focus on quality and flavor.
Chick N Max
Chick N Max is making waves with its focus on quality and the unique flavor of their chicken offerings. The brand is expanding its presence in key markets by opening 50 new restaurants across the Southeast. Currently, the chicken chain operates restaurants in South Dakota, Kansas, and Texas. In 2023, Chick N Max opened its very first franchise in Wichita, Kan.
The Southern-style menu includes chicken sandwiches, crispy tenders, smoked wings, legs and breasts, plus 11 different sauces. It also has sides other chicken restaurants do not have, such as deviled egg potato salad, turnip greens and smoked white beans.
Raising Cane’s
As of May 2024, Raising Cane’s has expanded to 800 restaurants worldwide, opening new outlets in Knoxville, Tenn.; Pleasant Hills, Pa.; New York City; Michigan City, Ind., and Carmel, Ind.
In 2024, Raising Cane’s is projected to generate over $4.5B in sales, and its flagship store in Times Square is expected to rack up more than $20M in sales in its first year.
Raising Cane’s was also in the top 25 of USA Today’s “Top Workplaces USA 2024.” The restaurant chain takes pride in having a happy workforce. They have an internal app called “One Love Crew” where employees can post their success stories, farewells and thoughts. Employees can have weekends off and take vacations during holidays; they also offer financial planning support.
