Big Lots, the store brand known for discount deals on such items as furniture, household supplies, groceries and seasonal décor, is upping its in-store “wow factor” experience for its customers through its “The Lot” section in the front of its stores.
The roughly 500-s.f. section situated in the front of its stores features merchandise that rotates every six weeks, and encompasses a new unique theme each time. For example, earlier in 2021, The Lot’s theme was “Rule the Rewind,” and the section had such 1980’s retro merchandise as old-school graphic T-shirts and a Pac-Man arcade game.
“Our customers love The Lot and we’re seeing very positive sales trends,” said Bruce Thorn, president and CEO of Big Lots.
The idea of this section was first tested out two years ago, and after continually refining and perfecting the concept, all of Big Lots’ new store openings will now be featuring this special area. In addition, nearly all of its current stores now feature The Lot, with even more to come.
“The Lot helps us double down on what customers love the most about shopping with us — finding great deals on unique items,” Thorn said. “It’s an area of the store that we are constantly changing, with limited quantities of gifts and items for the home that you can’t find anywhere else.”
There are yet more surprises in store for The Lot in the future.
“Next year, we’re planning a fun theme to kick off the year, as well as spring organization, outdoor activities and several more surprises,” Thorn said. “We are constantly looking at the space to see how we can improve it from a merchandising and space planning perspective. Based on what we continue to learn, the concept will evolve to meet the needs of our customers.”
