Lidl signed a long-term lease for a space at the indoor shopping center, Queens Place, in the Elmhurst neighborhood of Queens. Lidl will take over one full floor of space previously occupied by Designer Shoe Warehouse. The shopping center houses other notable national tenants, such as Target, Macy’s Furniture & Mattress Gallery, Macy’s Backstage, Skechers and Chipotle. Lidl was interested in the location because it is a busy neighborhood mall that not only draws from the densely populated area of Elmhurst, but also the surrounding areas of the New York City borough.

The grocery store is expected to open in the first quarter of 2024. The mall is about 10 miles away from New York City, and the surrounding neighborhood consists of an ethnically diverse, working-class/middle-class family demographic. The Queens Place mall is situated less than a mile away from Queens Center, a regional mall with Macy’s and JCPenney as its anchors. This will be the second Lidl unit in Queens; the first opened in the Astoria neighborhood in April of last year. Lidl is expected to be an asset to the mall, providing daily errand grocery items for its customers at discounted prices.
