Desi District, a Texas-based Indian grocer and eatery with four locations in the Dallas/Fort Worth metro, signed a lease to open its first unit in the state of North Carolina by August. The end cap space, which previously housed a NewSouth Window Solutions store, is in Pineville, a suburb situated about 15 miles south of Charlotte. Other new tenants expected to open in the strip mall within the next few months include Playland Indoor Playground, a North Carolina-based family activity center filled with obstacle courses, slides and ball pits, and Fight Sports Charlotte, a jiu-jitsu studio with one other location in the Charlotte metro.

The site appealed to Desi District as it is located less than one mile from the town of Ballantyne, which has a large Indian population. It is also less than a mile away from Carolina Place Mall, a regional shopping center that houses such high-traffic anchors as Dick’s Sporting Goods, Belk, Dillard’s, REI and JCPenney. It is also less than a two-mile drive away from the Atrium Health Pineville hospital. Desi District is currently in expansion mode and expects to open up to six more units in other new territories by late 2024/early 2025 such as Atlanta and Carmel, Ind., as well as into the Houston and Austin metros. Desi District features a full-service restaurant that can accommodate special events with its banquet hall, and its specialty grocery specializes in halal meats and unique spices.
